The Newton Fund (2014-2021) built research and innovation partnerships with partner countries to support their economic development and social welfare, and to develop their research and innovation capacity for long-term sustainable growth. The fund was managed by the UK’s Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, and was delivered through seven UK delivery partners. It had a total UK government investment of £735 million up until 2021, with matched resources from partner countries.

As a delivery partner under the Newton Fund, the British Council supported the skills of researchers and created opportunities for exchange of knowledge and experience between institutions in the UK and 18 partner countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America to collaborate and to help building international science partnerships that contributed to the SDGs globally.
